Here’s another instalment of songs from the last week that have been brought in!
1. Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me – Elton John + George Michael
This is a GREAT song, both lyrically and melodically. The way it builds and crescendoes is fantastic, and it’s a wonderful song for building the voice.
2. We Need You Right Now Lord – Donny Hathaway
This is one of mine that has been quite insightful. If you are a fan of gospel music, you can hear a clear forerunner of modern gospel vocals in how Donny Hathaway sings in this.
3. Just Can’t Wait To Be King
This was brought in by one of my younger students, who sings regularly in theatre performances and school shows. Whilst fun and seems easy, the speed and crispness demanded by the lyrics makes this a tricky song for younger singers to get right. It’s worth doing it slowly and doing it line by line before building up to full speed.
4. She Used To Be Mine – Sara Bareilles
Sara Bareilles is an artist that previously could have been described as ‘up and coming’ whereas now she has well and truly hit the big time. This is one of hers that is in a musical she helped write called ‘Waitress’ – see if you can work out who ‘she’ refers to in the song.
5. Free Fallin’ – John Mayer (orig. Tom Petty)
This song comes up again and again in chats with various guitar playing students. It’s such a great arrangement of a song that today could otherwise perhaps go unnoticed, but since Mayer covered it, it’s breathed new life into this song.
Hope you’ve enjoyed another instalment of songs from the last week.
