Five Songs I Recommended This Week

It struck me that I have recommended quite a few songs to singers this week. Some of these I only came across as clients have been working on them, others through my own listening.

If you’re looking for some new song ideas or just to experience some new music – enjoy!

1. Rainy Days and Mondays – The Carpenters

Karen Carpenter was a wonderful vocalist with an excellent mixed voice. Her and other singers of yesteryear like Barbra Streisand demonstrate how good singers of that era were. Many of today’s singers would do well to tune into what they were doing to improve their own quality.

2. Still Into You – Paramore

Hayley Williams is the lead singer of Paramore. She worked for some time with Brett Manning, who learned for some period of time under Seth Riggs (the founder of Speech Level Singing). Brett’s approach is in some ways different, but Hayley’s excellent vocals take some inspiration from what Seth developed.

3. Something to Save – George Michael

The amount of gushing that happens in my studio over George Michael’s vocals is hard to underestimate. His technical facility and beauty of tone are one thing, but his artistry and understanding of where he sounded best also shows incredible self-awareness. This one isn’t as poppy as wham, but is a bit more straight ahead than some of his artsy offerings.

4. Go the Distance – Michael Bolton

Michael Bolton was a rock singer in the 80s, who then started to move into his own in later years. He worked with Seth also in his later years, and you can find videos of him working with Seth on his YouTube channel.

5. Thing Called Love – Bonnie Raitt

Bonnie Raitt is a name I mention a fair bit, and this is a fun country song I came across when going through her back catalogue. It also features fabulous singer-songwriter and pianist Bruce Hornsby.
